In a post on Wednesday, Athletics Canada declared that Bedford would’ve been retiring immediately, by mutual agreement, after a bizarre couple of days for the national sport organization. Athletics Canada quickly removed the post.

After getting complaints about Bedford’s social media activity, the board of directors called an emergency meeting on Monday. According to the CBC, the decision to fire Bedford was nearly unanimous.

According to a brief announcement, Mat Gentes, the current chief operating officer, has been named interim-CEO.

The complaints against Bedford stemmed from tweets he sent during the Tokyo Olympics.

A woman makes an allusion to oral sex in one of the exchanges. Bedford responds with a tweet that reads, “You are killing me, girl.” I’m torn between laughing and crying as I read your tweets!”

A woman remarks not dressing in a bra in another. “Always important to have a pair of firm, upstanding individuals,” Bedford responds in a tweet.

“It is with a huge amount of excitement, and also loads and loads of thanks to even more folks than I can mention that I have officially retired today,” Bedford stated in a lengthy Facebook post on Wednesday.

Athletics Canada recruited Bedford in 2019 after a 40-year career in the sports industry that included numerous high-profile positions.

He wrote on Facebook that he was by now semi-retired at the time, but that he “agreed to return to the workforce for 18-24 months to mentor staff before retiring for good… and very well past the time I told AC I will indeed give it, and with COVID still raging, it is time for me to withdraw for good.”

Bedford served as the Canadian Olympic Committee’s executive director of marketing and communications, the executive director of Team Canada for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Toronto Argonauts’ senior vice-president of business operations, and the 100th Grey Cup Festival.

Bedford, who was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal, has served on the boards of directors of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Water Polo Canada and served as the chef de mission for Olympic Games of the Olympic Games 2004.
