Key Takeaways:
- When it comes to dressing models to the Gucci runway, Alessandro Michele does not shy away from daring fashion.
- The 49-year-old has given the last seven years as the storied Italian fashion house’s creative director, helping to revitalize the Gucci brand.
This Sunday, Michele and Gucci welcomed 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi for a rare look inside its design studios.

Gucci took the term “head-turning” to a literal level in 2018 during a Milan fashion show when models walked the runway displaying wax replicas of their noggins. Michele stated that the youth inspired the idea.
“It is this crazy idea that when you are a teenager, you have to care about your personality,” Michele explained to Alfonsi. “It was a way of expressing how you carried yourself. What do you think? And it’s not always easy because you have to pretend to be someone else.”
Michele explained that the look was not meant to be shocking but rather to spark conversation. It appears to have worked. When actor Jared Leto wore the look to the 2019 Met Gala, it went viral once more.
Leto, Michele’s close friend, told 60 Minutes that he asked Gucci to replicate the Milan look because it was a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.
More from Leto and Michele can be found in Sharyn Alfonsi’s full report on Gucci, which can be found next.
